Sports Premium

At St Robert’s, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.

What is Sports Premium?

Sports Premium is a government subsidy provided to state-maintained schools in England. It is intended to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport and to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Eligible schools receive an annual grant of £16,000 plus an additional payment of £10 per pupil in Years 1 to 6. This additional funding must be spent on Physical Education, school sport and physical activity. Each of these are defined as follows:

Physical Education – Planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all pupils.

School Sport – Extracurricular activities and competitions that take place beyond the curriculum within a school setting.

Physical Activity – How we as a school promote exercise for enjoyment in addition to being an integral part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Schools can use the premium to secure improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. The 5 key indicators are as follows:

  1. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  2. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
  3. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport

Swimming

Swimming and water safety are national curriculum requirements and essential life skills.

Impact of PE and Sport Premium

Schools who receive PE and Sport Premium are required to publish details of how this has been spent by 31st July of the academic year in which it was allocated.

At St Roberts we aim to utilise this funding to improve all aspects of Physical Education, sport and physical activity. This involves maximising pupil progress through our real PE scheme of work, increasing participation in sport and physical activity by enabling children to compete in school competitions and attend extra-curricular sports clubs, professional development for staff and  providing children in EYFS, with the skills and knowledge required to lead a healthy active lifestyle.

The document below provides details of how St Robert’s spent the funding it received in 2022-23 and the impact that this had on pupils' PE, physical activity and sport participation.
