How our classes are organised

Why are there mixed aged classes?

Our school has a pupil admission number (PAN) of 40 children. This means that we can admit up to 40 children in each year group.
This means that there are more children in each year group than can fit in one class. Class sizes are limited by law to 30 pupils in key stage 1.
The school has a capacity of 280 pupils. The school is full if each of our 7 year groups (Reception, then Years 1 to 6) contain 40 children.
The school is able to accommodate this number by splitting two year groups over three classes. The following is an example:
Year 3 has 40 children, Year 4 has 40 children.
Class 1: 27 x Year 3 children
Class 2: 13 x Year 3 and 13 x Year 4 children
Class 3: 27 x Year 4 children

It can be seen, therefore, that some classes have ‘pure’ year groups while others have ‘mixed’ year groups.

Which children go into each class?

The school allocates the children to the classes purely on age unless there are exceptional circumstances.
A look at the same example as above will further clarify this point:
Year 3 has 40 children, Year 4 has 40 children.
Class 1: 27 x youngest Year 3 children
Class 2: 13 x oldest Year 3 and 13 x youngest Year 4 children
Class 3: 27 x oldest Year 4 children

When are parents told about these arrangements?

Prospective parents are always told about these arrangements on their initial visit to the school. The information is also contained in the school prospectus and on the school website.
