Curriculum Intent
The overarching aim for English is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment (NC, 2014). Through the provision of an enriched and engaging English curriculum, we develop confident and enthusiastic learners, who are equipped with the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society both now and in their future.
Reading is at the heart of all our English lessons and is intertwined throughout the entire curriculum, where possible. We want pupils to understand that reading allows them to discover new knowledge, revisit prior knowledge and understand more about what they learn. In addition, we want children to learn about the ‘Virtues to live by’ (Catholic Education - Diocese of Leeds), through fiction texts and apply the virtues to their everyday life so that they flourish as human citizens.
