Personal Social & Health Education

Curriculum Intent

Personal development is at the heart of everything that we do. It is a fundamental aspect of our children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural education and well-being and it underpins our ethos and learning in line with the catholic virtues of our school. We provide a PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and RHE (Relationships and Health Education) curriculum that equips every child with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values, emotions, and skills needed to stay happy, safe and healthy.

We want to prepare them to play an active role in society and to thrive now and in the future as global citizens. Our PSHE education will help children to make informed decisions and embrace opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities that they may face.

We want our children to be confident and have a set of fundamental building blocks needed to form positive and respectful relationships with friends, family, teachers and other individuals who they will come across in society.

We want our children to understand and live by the British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Mutual Respect, Individual Liberty and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs- essentially common human values. They will be sensitive, caring and thoughtful towards others and will understand that some human characteristics are protected in order to ensure equality for all.

Personal Social & Health Education Curriculum Development

RHE (Relationships and Health Education) has become a statutory subject for all schools. Any teaching about love and sexual relationships in a Catholic school must be rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching about what it is to be truly human in Christ, what it means to live well in relationship with others and be presented within a positive framework of Christian virtue.

We follow Ten:Ten’s  programme for Catholic primary schools, Life to the Full, which teaches Relationships Education and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church. The framework of the programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE Programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.
